Well, almost. I told my wife De Sica was coming and surprisingly she did not hurl the pot of borsht at me, instead she said something about Seinfeld that was not too flattering...Today it arrived, "The Children are Watching Us"... and it didn't take me long to realize I haven't seen it before.
Let me be brief... I liked it, that was pretty much assured - I don't see how one can not love any De Sica's film, but I could also see its imperfections.
The references to Forbidden Games are inevitable, but where De Sica's work is at times too direct and ever so slightly lacking in subtlety, The Games (judging from the memory, to be fair!) truly excells.
Just to be fair, again, I don't think one should be pitting one such film against another, and I know much of it is very subjective and personal, but to me the Games still remain on the top.
Regardless... an excellent recommendation!

Follow Ups:
examinations of love and marriage I've ever seen.
SPOILER:
The husband, at great sacrifice, continued on for one reason only but isn't it the most important one of all: the child.
The wife-- and this is the true essence of De Sica's genius--- is not portrayed as a malignant force but as a woman possessed by a passion over which she was powerless though she did try, mightily, to fight it.
The movie, of course, could not have been the force it was if not for the incredible performance of the young boy.
What made the film personal for me was the uncanny resemblance of the father to my own: a body double, in fact!
That scene of the boy walking down the tracks is a classic, no? My wife said I was jumping around like a stuck pig during it.

Yes, sure, plus some very well done other scenes, like that woman carrying the glass of water for the maid - it spoke the whole story right away. Father was great. So I just put the Forbidden Games to the head of the queue, too bad I will not see it till I am back from the trip.
