Sean Penn horribly miscast.
Horribly.
And then... the director became confused and decided the film really was about... Jude's effete little character and his schoolboy-ish crush.
Oh, for pity's sake, what a load of crap.
You want good Southern?
Check out Orson Welles, Paul Newman, and Tony Franciosa in "Long Hot Summer." It's over-the-top in a very good way.

  NO Hollywood actor can imitate it because it's not just pronunciation. Kind of like learning to hit the keys on a piano but not being able to pick out a melody.

    Same with the Boston/New England accent: Hollywood NEVER gets it right (save for Matt Damon or Ben Affleck, etc., people who grew up here).
