  The original was a much more suspenseful, believable, sympathetic movie that has far more atmosphere and style.

    I happen to think *both* are excellent and entertaining genre movies. Same plot structure but different themes and concerns IMO.

  Just to add (unrelated) regarding Gangs of NY. Daniel Day Lewis deserved Oscar for his performance. However, I cannot stand Leonardo.
