Scorsese has become a directorial version of the Rolling Stones: a major artist for years but who has fallen into a rut from which, obviously, he hasn't a clue of how to extract himself.
If you think the Stones are as good now as they were throughout the sixties and seventies... well, more power to you.
The Aviator, Gangs of NY, and this bloated remake of a muscular, taut drama (see Infernal Affairs to see what a great story it truly is)underline how far Martin's fallen.

and unfortunately for me, I did not even know that until I saw "The Departed" tonight :(The original was a much more suspenseful, believable, sympathetic movie that has far more atmosphere and style.

I happen to think *both* are excellent and entertaining genre movies. Same plot structure but different themes and concerns IMO.I quite enjoyed The Departed.
