This is a range war western starring Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Carol Baker, Jean Simmons, Charles Bickford, Burl Ives, and Chuck Connors. We are constanly reminded by the characters and cinematography how BIG the country is and I found myself syaing it at every vista long shot. Peck is a successful sea captain from the east who comes out west to cattle baron Bickford's sprawling ranch to wed Bickford's daughter (Baker), who he has met in Baltimore. He and foreman Heston take an immediate dislike to each other, exacerbated by Peck'e refusal to be pushed into a confrontation. Peck eventually falls in love with schoolteacher Simmons, Baker's supposed best friend, who also owns the ranch between Bickford's and arch rival Ives'. When a range war is escalated, Peck tries to stop it. Predictable but fun to see all the stars interact and to watch the Panavision/technicolor scenery. The DVD is much brighter and more satisfying than the laserdisc. Peck felt that the story was an allegory for the Cold War.
Follow Ups:
this is showing on TCM Feb 6th at 8PM
I'll try to remember to give my 2 cents on the film after I've watched it this weekend-I'm ashamed to admit I've never had the privilege.

I have not seen the laserdisc, but the D.V.D image is beautiful. And Burl Ives, not as Rudolph would have known him.

Right, equaled only by his performance as Judge Sullivan in "Let No Man Write my Epitaph". Although he has many great lines in "TBC", none is as good as the Judge's, "Orphaned, illigitemate, and black. That's what I call starting at the top".

A fantastic score.

No doubt my favorite score from a western.I'm very fond of this movie and enjoy it every time I see it. Wish I had seen it on the "big" screen.

You guys might enjoy this CD. All the great themes from Westerns.

Fantastic music and sonics-an absolute 10. They aren't kidding about the gunshot warnings, either!

That opening with the cattle herd sounds used to drive our dogs nuts...they'd run behind the speakers to catch 'em.

I so agree. I found myself singing along: "It's so big, it's so huge, it's so large, it's real gi-gantic; so im-mense, enor-mous,
its pro-potions, make me frantic" (etc.)Score by Jeromw moross, who, besides movies, did a lot of TV work.

a good actor before this?
And was there ever a slimier weasel than that portrayed by Chuck (Rifleman) Connors?

nudge. I remember Paul Newman and Liz as being terrific in it, too.

Yes, and of note prior to "TBC" he was in "East of Eden", "Desire Under the Elms" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". After he was in "...Epitaph" as I mention above plus a lot of important TV drama work. But still, a lot of people remember him as a folk singer.
