An Irish-flavored "Sopranos" badly done. An only-in-the-movies premise and a cliche-soaked script. Little drama, lots of violence. And the coarseness of the language. The new screenplay writer's crutch. No need for a clever script since they learned the rubes are just suckers for the f-word. How, oh how, did Bogart become a legend without calling anyone a c*cks*cker or mother f*'er..every two minutes? All kneel to Jack while he plays the same tired smirking character he's played for 25 years now. Go away, Jack...or do something new that actually requires some acting.
And that Vera Farmiga who played the shrink is so unremarkable that I wasn't really sure whether her character actually was the girlfriend to both guys until halfway through the film.
Only good thing...for first time DiCaprio didn't come across like a fuzz-faced sixteen year old trying to play a grown-up. Damon's cop was way too erudite. Wahlberg did OK considering his character was shackled with a crap script. Damon was cardboard. Either Baldwin or Sheen was redundant. Either would have been enough.
Scorcese owned the post-GF gangster movie with "Goodfellas" and "Casino". This one really blows his rep. Not to mention his long string of non-ganster turkeys. At least there wasn't a urinal shot...or was there?

Follow Ups:
for the Departed. Not the worse IMO but did not show any range. Vera Farmiga has a nice quality (slutty look) but did not sell me on being a shrink. It is nice to be in a forum where others agree Jack N is a one note player. Mark W is over the top but at least I enjoyed his role. After watching Infernal Affairs I feel cheated with the Departed which sometimes takes entire scenes from it.I still enjoyed the Departed as an excellent popcorn movie. I guess I am (somewhat) used to the fact that American films are 'dummied down' to the American audiences and in that context are watchable. I am just happy I did not see Infernal Affairs first.

I mean that Farmiga looks like every pleasant but unremarkable looking young woman. Thirty seconds after a scene, you forget what she looked like.

Yep. An all-around disappointment.I've been revisiting Antonioni lately and really enjoyed the restrained, almost tentative performance Nicholson gave in that '60's icon, The Passenger. It gets better with repeated viewings.
His (Nicholson) balance was later slowly replaced with a reeking, almost constant hubris. I still want to like him, though.
By the way, what a master Antonioni is. It could have been his hand that touched Nicholson in such a way.

Jack's performances reel from lampost to lampost, I assume it takes a special director to keep him in line.
Polanski in Chinatown managed the feat, too.

films.
Pusher.
Failan.
Rainy Dog.
No romanticism (Godfathers), glorifying violence for its own sake (Goodfellas).
