This drama starring Sterling Hayden and already 50 yo Barbara is not a great revelation overall, but it still manages to keep you interested enough to continue. And along the way it makes a few poignant psychological observations, what make the viewing worthwhile. These are somewhat hidden below the surface, so pay attention or you will miss them.Of a particular interest was the conflict between Barbara and Anthony Pope towards the end. This blast of reality was welcome and is not too common in that era of largely made-up characters.
I haven't seen this film before, and I certainly don't regret renting it.

Follow Ups:
This was a film that I would call a second tier film. Which is not a shot, I too thought was it was good. I suspect that this film was more avant garde in its time. 1957, a time in America when many women never began careers, instead opting to pursue being housewives. Here was a woman who had a career, then gave up that career, but not the ambition. Turns out she is more ambitious than her husband, which in 1957 America must have been a shot off the bow.

If you haven't seen it, check out "Mildred Pierce" for Joan Crawford's Oscar wining portrayal of a successful businesswoman in 1945.
We saw this film for the first time about a year ago. I don't remember a lot about it, except that it was a good one and worth renting. It didn't hurt that I find Barbara Stanwyck a little scary from remembering her from The Big Valley when I was a kid...plus I always enjoy watching Sterling Hayden.
