that in particular I felt had been robbed of winning an award.... I recently re-watched Robert Redford's Ordinary People and was again amazed by Mary Tyler Moore's performance in that film. Perhaps it was because she was playing against type in the film...... Cissy Spacek ended up taking home "gold" that year for "Coal Miner's Daughter". I remember as I watched the ceremony back in 81 how ripped off I felt Moore was.....and upon recent viewing I STILL feel the same way. To be honest though, I have never been a fan of Spacek, who I have always felt was over-rated...... Anyone have any other Oscar loser outrage?
Robert Redford beat our David Lynch (Elephant Man) and Scorsese (Raging Bull) for best director that year. In fact, neither Lynch nor Kubrick nor Orson Welles ever won a best director. I gave up on the awards a long time ago.
Yeah, perennial Academy fave Tommy wore nasty makeup and died at the end(Philadelphia),so obviously deserved it over the performance Liam gave in Schlinder's List.
The very early bar scene in Schlinder's where he's sitting taking stock of the available shorties and then the reaction when the Nazis walk in,no dialogue, movement, just his quiet, controlled contempt contained more acting in that single scene than anything Tommy did in the whole film. Not to mention the later train scene where the trainload of Jews is being treated worse than cattle,Liam's dying inside, but makes spraying the prisoners down with a hose into a game to get the Nazis unwittingly to help, the wholetime hiding how desperate he actually was.
And even worse was Ralph Fiennes losing best supporting actor in Schindler's List to Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugitive??? Also Pulp Fiction (and Shawshank Redemption) losing to Forrest Gump. Taxi Driver losing to Rocky. Goodfellas losing to Dances With Wolves. Apocalypse Now losing to Kramer versus Kramer.

way too Hollywood to take seriously anyway

Winter's Bone was not mediocre. I thought both Lawrence and Hawkes deserved honors for that movie.

Oscars are given based on accumulated film roles and I think it is wrong
I also wish world cinema would be considered equally but that is another post...
my take on it anyway...
Imo, one of the biggest travesties in the history of the Academy Awards. Adolph Caesar (Sergeant Waters), nominated for "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" (1984). One of the best acting performances by an African American I can remember seeing. To be honest it was a strong group of nominees (Haing S. Ngor, winner (The Killing Fields), John Malkovich (Places in the Heart), Pat Morita (The Karate Kid) and Ralph Richardson (Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes).
Adolph Cesar was stronger than anyone.

It was no travesty, though I loved Cesar's performance. Ngor was wonderful.

...I didn't get Django after the opening scene. Tarantino is very overrated.
winning this year. Also, still think Annette Benning was robbed of the Oscar for her leading role in American Beauty.

I could not agree more..... SPR was an amazing accomplishment for SS.... And Tom Hanks portrayal was equally oscar worthy.... I also liked The Thin Red Line that year as well.....and there were some excellent performances in that film as well that were overlooked.... I feel the same about Ms. Paltrow as I do Spacek....what is the big deal? (Paltrow's mother is a FAR better actress)..... Cate Blanchett's performances as Elizabeth I was far more compelling than Paltrow's that year.....
For another, less well known Blanchett acting coup d'etat, check out (if you haven't already) her scene stealing performance in Bandits.
