I liked the 1998 remake with Matthew Broderick. That version was almost a complete story in itself. Some of the acting was a bit cornball, but the effects and the monster were first rate. They did a great job IMO of making people appreciate the size and ability of the critter -- which turned out to be an iguana on steroids; not a scaly dinosaur like in the Japanese originals.

Maybe the Broderick film was too good, causing producers to think that audiences would pay to see yet another version.

So we are getting one. Filming is starting up on Oahu.

Preferring the campy originals instead. There was such a backlash against the American version by fans, that Toho put out another 4 or 5 movies afterwards. It will be interesting to see how this one is handled.
