Unfortunately, this episode leans towards the human side of Reacher with the introduction of a daughter and a closening relationship with a MP Major, like himself. Cruise does his usual yeoman's job of being the guy made of stone (he's showing middleage in the face) while Smulders did a decent job of an officer wronged at the hands of international arms dealers. Danika Yarosh plays Reacher's long-lost (or not) daughter who gums up the action with typical teen attitude that makes you want to strangle her. All the other characters are cardboard or punching bags.
I liked Reacher1 better: more action, less human interest. This film shows that Reachers "cares" but certainly doesn't feel comfortable with emotions that go along with it.
You will get a sizeable portion of action but you could have had more without the side-story. Doesn't matter if you are a Reacher fan, I guess.
PS. Can anybody be as tough as Reacher?
It's amazing what different people will write about a common topic. One review was in Forbes, bad-mouthing the flick because it's profit percentages were not as good as the first movie, proceeding from there to give opinions about Cruise, the story, possIble budget mismanagements, etc, et al. Bottom line: less money = less quality. Absolute nonesense, but when choosing a source like Forbes for cultural opinion, that's what pops out.
Another review was in Rolling Stone, with no mention of money. They mention the public flack of Cruise playing a bone-crusher like Reacher, but quickly added "get over it". They liked the film very much, saying that Cruise did an excellent portrayal. The ramping up of "human interest" elements added to the quality of the story, in that reviewer's opinion.
We can find most any opinion. Many Reacher novels are out there; many folks already familiar with the character. He's someone drifting about, disillusioned with American society and government after initially buying into it all. Sound familiar to anyone? Maybe most of us?
...I thought it was as good or better than the first one.
There was plenty of action and intrigue and the emotion made it better.
looking forward to the latest book but can easily wait a LONG time to see the great
and powerful Jack Reacher yet again portrayed by Cruise so will stream it... whenever.

I've read all the books - they're my favorite.
The answer is no.

In about the same 'role' as in 'JR', but this time he gets one line of three words. He looks lots older than he did in the 1st movie...I think.
I enjoyed the movie--saw it last nite (Thursday) in our arguably-best Phoenix-area theater.
