...kinda dark: heroic but no one gets out alive. "Appearances" by Cushing and Fisher a bit creepy. Too much bouncing about the galaxy. And no opening crawl setting up the situation at hand: blasphemy!
...I heard there was no opening crawl since it isn't really part of the actual Star Wars episodes.And the different locations made no difference.

Like PhilJ notes in his title, it is the story of the message from Princess Leia.
And a rousing heroic tale. I liked it better than last years episode VII. I hope we see more like this one in the future.

Just your basic shoot'em up Star Wars gig with more shooting ups than any movie before. Someone said this was more of a war movie than a "fantasy" movie. I agree. It did not have that injection of lightness we normally see but that might be because it is a Brit movie with a well-spread international cast.
I think they digitized Peter Cushing and maybe Carrie Fisher, not sure. And, I couldn't understand a thing Forrest Whitaker had to say. All in all, it was a spectacle but not a knockout. There are better ways to spend your time--like leaving as soon as the credit starts as there are NO EASTER EGGS. (No future promises like: Coming in 2021.)
for that review. Now I dont have to catch another migraine watching a 3D cowboy movie with British accent.

all the buzz suggests it is a stand-alone in-betweener kind of episode. Perhaps, I'm hoping, it is less for the little kids and more for the older kids among us...:-)

Creation of the Death Star thingy.
is the combination of High Tech, living in Huts in the Desert, while wearing capes and hoods.
It all looks so archaic, except for the Space Ships and Lasers.
Light Sabers?
Reminds me of Indiana Jones, the guy waving an actual Saber at Indy, so he shoots him.
Hand to hand combat w/Light Sabers seems so stupid to me.
Clearly, Ray Guns, Phasers and Lasers are the way to go!
The recent remake was just that , the original one all over again,
and not especially interesting.
They aren't getting my Dollars this time around.

...the original was a cowboy movie set in space.
The most recent one was very similar to the first with more PC characters - a woman and a black man - but was fun nonetheless.
I have to say I've enjoyed them all, some more than others, except the one with Jar-Jar Binks.
I know a lot of people who do not like Jar Jar Binks. Is it because he talks too much or the accent or the looks I wonder. I thought he was funny and a little irritable but OK.

Saying they de-fantasified it and turned it into a war flick, wishing Lucas would come back and take over. Mick actually liked the first 8 episodes, which I never could, and thinks this one completely loses resemblance, charm, and worth.
So I might actually like this one better.

...I can usually trust him so I may be taking a pass on this one. It may be significant that it's promoted as a "Star Wars Story ". Uh-oh!

Not quite the right demographic for it.
...I tend to like what he does irrespective of age differences. Curiously, JM was significantly more positive about last year's Star Wars offering. What a difference a year makes (his age or movie quality?)

Suckers for Star Wars.
...Like blah, uninteresting trailers that reinforce some of the negative reviews. Another big influencer for me at least is Rotten Tomatoes. Last I looked the Tomato Meter had RO ~ 85%, a value that might just override the trailers and negative reviews.
...I think Rotten Tomatoes is skewed toward a younger audience - under 50.
...I hadn't read his review until just now.
I usually like him but I don't always agree with him.
Probably find out this weekend if I get to see it.
