Welcome to Wyoming!
This is the first sign of a thaw from Summer's forced dreck of animated and lightweight kids movies. 'Wind River' takes in you into the very adult world of a frozen Wyoming, a brutal crime, and the plight and condition of the Native American.
Renner is a pro-hunter for Forestry and Wildlife on the federal reservation lands. We begin with him protecting a herd of sheep from the big bad wolves. As he continues to track he picks up human footprints in the snow and soon finds the frostbitten body of a young, pretty NA girl. The first available FBI agent is Olsen who has a rocky start on the investigation which leads them to the parents, a group of druggies, and finally to a camp of security guards protecting a few drilling rigs.
We see the Native American personality, how they communicate, what their natural expectations are, and how they express grief.
Well written with a top-performing central cast. Certainly worth a walk-in to welcome the first of cinematic autumn.

Terrific and well worth the trip to the theater to see on the big screen. Jeremy Renner gives a great performance and they used real Indian actors, not some fake Hollywood look-a-likes.
Didn't see Gannett Peak though, it's very recognizable. Credits stated filmed in Utah. Still great scenery.
before he set him free.
I had to quickly figure out which movie to see with my spouse and used your recommendation. Saw Sicario from a recommendation here and while I don't like movies with guns as a rule, I felt the dramatic tension that is maintaine captivating.
Same for this movie, but the scenery and dialogue are on another level and there is a lot of survival stuff that I really like.
To my wife, just ANOTHER movie, though, so be forewarned ;-)
Many thanks for the tip. I must see it. Loved Hell or High Water and...
45 years ago I hiked alone for a week in the Wind River Range and up to the base of Gannett Peak, the highest point in Wyoming. It's not far from where this was filmed.
I'll never forget it. Absolutely beautiful.
You know it as soon as you see those chiseled peaks. Different and beautiful country. Brokeback Mountain is in there.
