...went to see this one before it's gone with half of the 16 screens at the multiplex playing Star Wars. This was the film that got the most Golden Globe nominations and is sure to be big at the Oscars.
It's a love story as only Guillermo del Toro can tell it.
About an alien creature - a more handsome Creature from the Black Lagoon - and a lonely mute woman who cleans the secret government facility he's been brought to in 1962.
Terrific acting, great villains, cool cars and an interesting story.
Highly recommended.

Mkuller - We loved it and I thought about it for a day or two, something that's rare these days for me.
The entire cast was terrific and the Richard Jenkins performance was beautiful. And Michael Shannon was cast perfectly, in a role reminiscent of his Boardwalk Empire character. He was fun to watch. We also enjoyed how all the characters were archetypes but still had depth and nuance. A breath of fresh air.
And yes, the art direction was stunning enough to make the effort to see it on the big screen.
Have a great day!
Decent story and filmmaking but what a cheap shot, liberal propaganda that movie is. I mean the only sympathetic characters in this crap are aliens & sexual ,ethnic minorities badly speaking English not to mention Russians speaking like Bulgarians. Another soul massage for guilt ridden self depreciating idiots. At the end there is simply no choice but to have a hint of sympathy for that loathsome, brutal, straight white guys and their whorish wives and stupid, fat kids. That would be most of You guys....
...this conservative while I watched and enjoyed the movie.

Its because you're brainwashed and cant think while you're entertained.
Watch it again. What a cheap shit of the movie it is and how stereotypical. It surely will be a major contender for the Oscar in the present self loathing Bollywood.
...wow, what a rant.
I thought all movies from Hollywood were actually liberal propaganda.
Funny that villain was a fascist here offended you but not in Blade Runner.
And you aren't a stupid, fat white guy?

What offended me is the sentimental cover for that racist crap and the obviousness of it.
I grew up on communists propaganda movies and it's merely entertaining to see how Holy Wood implements the socio technical tools to influence the audience.
And yes I'm exactly that; a stupid , fat, white guy with five rifles and a truck and when I switched my brain off I really liked that movie (like all the other Del Toro movies).
This combination of cold-war thriller, romance, fantasy, sci-fi, and probably more I can't think of was EXCELLENT.
But I can understand if it doesn't appeal to some movie lovers. BUT...to each his/her own!

...odd as it was.

I have had big screen withdrawal and with the holiday I finally made it back.
This was a wild mashup of classic 60s monster movie, Cold War thriller and love story. I could not have expected such a combination to work but it is quite brilliant. From the 60s setting, the music, the black and white tv shows, it's a detailed fantasy world.
And the key is Sophie Hawkins, who is mute and so must communicate all through gesture, expression, and movement, harking back to silent movies and she owns it in a way that should bring her acting awards aplenty.
The monster or animal or whatever he is is another incredibly original visual creation.
There is the tension of a thriller, the pure good against evil of melodrama, and a love story that works. A great one to see on a big screen.
Thanks for that review. I'll look for it on the small screen.

Looking forward to seeing it. I'm a fan of Del Toro's.
