Hi folks....I'm finally considering getting myself a DVD player. I was holding out for a DVD recorder, but I'm caving.
Anyways, I currently have a regular interlaced TV and am not ready to invest in a new TV just yet. Although my TV will not accept a progressive scan signal, is it a good idea to get a DVD player that does both progressive scan and interlaced? At the same price point, will a DVD player that does not output progressive scan be of significantly higher quality than a DVD player that can output both?

Charlie,
If you have not already purchased one.... I'd jump on a Panny RP82, a true sleeper that's DC'd, and now going for around $180.

There are two options. Buy a relatively cheap, non-progressive scan DVD player and wait to see what happens with HDTV & High Definition DVD. Or buy a progressive scan unit and a better TV down the road. Basically, I have opted to wait. HDTV is slow in coming as is HD-DVD, so I would not drop a lot of money into a TV.

You did not mention what your pricepoint is, but from everything I have heard it is a good idea to get a Progressive scan model if you are one day going to upgrade to a HD monitor. Progressive scan models even at the lower price points do just as good if not better job of displaying interlace pictures. I have the Sony DVP-NS700p and have used it in both modes and have been very pleased.

Until I get around to putting together a HT system, my pricepoint is under $250. A HD monitor will likely be the first thing I get once I have the space and the cash.I don't have many choices nearby (Target, Walmart, Kmart), but I should be able to find a decent progressive scan player.
Regardless of what you buy, be weary of non-electronics store reatailers. Unless your gonna buy, and run. If you have any question or problem there is going to be no customer sevice. Check out abtelectronics.com famous for their customer service. I recently went to the store(online purchasing or over the phone is just as good) to look at a TV when I thought about I called them to order; well they were sold out so they gave me the better model which cost $300 more for the same price!

It may be hard to find a non progressive model now adays.
