Picture quality is pretty good but I notice that sometimes it goes a weird when panning across, say, a brick wall (strange lighting effects, kind of stripey shades across it. And on peoples faces if they turn and the light levels on their face change sometimes they look a bit green! Is this common with DVD players? It cost about £180 in UK. Using a cheap RGB SCART cable.

Can you provide a few more details? What's your display device? Does the TV have a line doubler? Is this a progressive scan DVD player? Have you calibrated your TV with Video Essentials or Avia?Jagged diagonal lines are a pretty common digital artifact with composite, s-video and component connections. I don't know anything about RGB hookups. It's possible that some of what you're seeing is a TV issue that is only now being exposed by a higher quality signal -- the VE / Avia disks may help isolate the problem if that's the case.

Well it's a 7 year old Toshiba 2535DB TV, not widescreen. 28 inches I think. Gives a very good picture with off-air broadcasts. The jagged edges arent as much of a problem as the strange effect noticed on thinks like brick walls (only at certain angles) when the picture pans across them. I have ordered a better quality SCART cable though so hopefully that will sort it.
