i live in an apartment, and i can't dedicate an astronomical ammount of money to a home theater, but i collect and watch alot of dvd's and have always been into nice stereos and currently i have a home recording studio and that's it, no regular stereo, let alone a home theater, my theater now is a 27" jvc tv and a sony dvd player.i was thinking of possibly getting:
a toshiba 42H82 hdtv
a denon avr 3803 reciever
a denon dvm 4800 5 disc dvd video/audio, cd player
and some paradigm speakers for fronts, rears, and center and a velodyne subany other bang for the buck suggestions anyone can give me? i definatly want a 16:9 hdtv and would really like a dvd changer (especially one that plays dvd audio discs).

I think you've assembled a decent budget HT there. If you can manage the money and the space, I would try to go for the Paradigm Atoms as front and rear speakers, and the CC-270 as the center. IMO, they will way outperform the Cinema series speakers in terms of accuracy, dynamics and bass. The price difference is minimal, something like $40/pair.The Velodyne is a great choice. All Velodyne subs offer a crossover bypass, so you can use the low-pass filter in your Denon receiver without having "cascading" crossovers. This is a rare feature in budget-priced subwoofers. If you can afford the SPL series, great. The CHT series is good, but if you have a larger room, try to get at least the CHT-12.

avr3803 nice
42hdx82, nicerrr (new model)
dvm4800, nice, but why not go for the yamaha dvds5200, i think that's the model number, but it's a new sacd, dvd-a, dvd-v (progressive scan from fourudjia processor) player, for only a grand.

That Yamaha DVD player sounds pretty cool. Any idea where I could find more info about it? I've been the the Yamaha web site, but no luck finding that model, or for that matter, anything in their product line that does SACD DVD-Audio and progressive/Faroudja. Maybe it's simply too new and I need to be patient.

actually, the model number on that player is the dvds2300 and it hasn't been released yet, i think it'll be out later this month, but yeah, it seems like a great affordable player. And i think it might just give the marantz player a run for its money....

Nice link. It looks pretty interesting. I've never owned any Yamaha products, though all I've heard has been positive. It's definitely now on my list to check out. The list also includes Philips DVD963SA, Pioneer Elite DV-47Ai, Marantz DV-8300, and the Sony DVP-NS999ES. None seem to have everything I want. Maybe my wish list is too long. :-)
Or perhaps HD + Satellite/Digital cable feed?Depending on your OTA HD station availability, you may find an HD tuner a lot of fun. I have the Samsung SIR T-151, which only gets over the air (no satellite) HD. Where I live, I can pull in 5 stations now, and another will come online in May. In an apartment, that may present some antenna placement issues making this a less desirable acquisition.
BTW, Stereophile Guide to Home Theater reviewed this HD tuner in the February 2003 issue. They don't recommend it. OTOH, I bought this tuner before their review, and it has worked well for me. If you buy one of these, you might want to be sure you can return it if things don't work out.
