They should be utilized whenever possible. DIY cables are very easy to make. Do a search for part and technique suggestions. (memorial cable for one on enjoythemusic.com). This comprisal of three cables DOES NOT INCLUDE AUDIO. An additional left and right audio cable is necessary. Sounds like a lot of milage but this configuration is absolutely worth it.
Composite video uses a single 75ohm coax to carry the entire video signal while componet video requires 3 75ohm coax cables...one for red, one for blue, and one for green and the h/v sync.If your monitor has BNC connectors you can simply purchase BNC to RCA adaptors [Radio Shack sells them, so does Tributaries] or buy cables with RCA's at one end and BNC at the other.
Composite carries all color signals in one connection (typically labeled a yellow color RCA type) and component carries the Chrominance and luminance separately (like S-video, just in three different cables)....The BNC connectors are usually for RGB connections only.
