Here are the particulars:New Denon AVR-883 A/V receiver
B&W DM602.5 S3 front, DM601 S 3 rear surrounds, LCR600 S3 center speakers.Mitsubishi CS-32307 TV 32" circa 1997.
Mirage powered subwoofer from the stone age.
The good news is that all five B&W speakers are connected correctly and working, as well as a DVD player and a VCR, BUT...
1. The TV audio is not coming through the receiver (unless I want to blow up the receiver by turning it all the way up). The audio outputs from the TV are connected to the TV audio inputs on the receiver, so this makes no sense to me.
2. The prehistoric subwoofer was meant to be hooked up as a left/right pair of speakers by cavemen. It does have two audio low level inputs (L/R). Naturally, the receiver has one preamp out, making for an interesting hookup, which, of course, doesn't work (unless you like the sound of a subwoofer breaking up). I have tried hooking the receiver preamp out to each channel individually, as well as a Y jack to both inputs.
Any suggestions? I thought I knew a little bit about this stuff. I guess living through the sixties proved to be more dangerous than previously thought.

Follow Ups:
If you have a VCR in your HT set up, and Dman's idea doesnt' work, consider tuning TV stations through the VCR, routing the VCR audio Out cables to the Video In jacks on the A/V unit.

Regarding question #1- Does the TV have a setting for fixed or variable output control? If so set it for fixed and if possible, turn OFF the speakers on the TV! It sounds like your TV volume is just too low going into the HT receiver.
Regarding #2- Use the Y-adaptor and hook up both subs to the one subwoofer output. Check that your HT receiver is set to output sound to the subs (main, rear and center should be set to "small" in the parameters) and enjoy (hint: because the sound going to both subs in mono, you can place them anywhere in the room for the flatest response!).
Cheers,

Thanks for the help. I'm afraid the subwoofer problem isn't that simple. I am dealing with one subwoofer with a left and a right low level input. It may be that the low level inputs cannot handle the receiver's preamp out. The only thing I haven't tried is connecting the Y jack from the receiver's preamp out to the speaker-like inputs on the subwoofer. Isn't ancient technology fun?

That sounds rather suspicious to me that the subs don't get along with the sub out on your receiver. The second option, assuming your subs have speaker level inputs, would be to run a lead from the front speaker outputs and hook those up to the sub (your HT receiver's front speakers would have to be set to "large"). Otherwise, are you sure the subs are still in working order?
Cheers and good luck (again!)
