Can anyone give me some advice?Being an old guy, with old stereo equipment, I just replaced my cd player with a dvd player (it's a low end Samsung). The audio cd sound through my also aging B&O receiver and Allison Six speakers is fine. When I play a dvd through the same system and route the sound the same way, the movie soundtrack volume is extremely low. I have to increase volume to almost the maximum setting to get a decent listening level (then I get a hum also). This seems to happen on all movies and it happens no matter how I set up the dvd player's sound. Is this a result of funnelling the enhanced movie soundtrack into only two channels?
Follow Ups:
Hi circlip,Assuming your DVD is set to play into a 2 channel system and you are using the PCM audio tracks on the DVD, what you are describing might be normal. First thing to do is to check the settings on your DVD player to ensure they're where you think they are.
The only part of your note I find of concern is having to turn up the volume for DVDs "to almost the maximum". The settings may be suspect.
Keep in mind that most modern CDs have the signal compressed to raise the average level. The reasons for this are beyond the scope of this message but nonetheless, this is what record producers, labels and mastering engineers do.
There are exceptions, usually the best sounding CDs, where you won't notice as large a discrepancy in level from your DVDs, but generally speaking, you will have to turn movies up more than you have to turn up music CDs (or conversely, you'll have to turn those CDs down).
Happy Listening (and viewing)!

Thanks for all the info. Just for jollies, I decided to review some of the titles in my small collection of DVD's to see if they actually had stereo or 2 channel steeings. The results are interesting:Blade Runner.........................no
Buckaroo Banzai......................no
Casablanca...........................no
Harry Potter & the Socerer's Stone...no
Hedwig & the Angry Inch..............YES
Lawrence of Arabia...................YES
Mulan................................no
Spirit...............................YES
Wizard of OZ.........................noH'mmm. Only one third of the titles have this option. My DVD player has the following settings:
Digital Output - PCM or Bitstream (set to PCM)
DTS - on or off (off)
Dynamic Compression - on or off (doesn't seem to make any difference)
2x Audio Scan - on or off (doesn't seem to make any difference)Is this a conspiracy to get us to buy new receivers and lots more speakers. I would appreciate any more info. I'm confused. And I am turning those DVD's way up. The B&O puts out about 35 watts per channel, but I really would not think that it would matter that much.

Those are audio settings. Look for the speaker setup option.
BTW what is the model number of your Samsung DVD player model?

I can not seem to find any speaker setup options. I have a choice of 2 channel analog out or digital out via optical or coax. These are just the back jacks. No specific "speaker" settings on the machine. It does have a 3d sound feature for stereo output. This sounds like it works with discs recorded in Dolby Surround or Dolby Digital, but needs to be set for each disc. I'm going to play with that and see what happens.
The speaker setup options are not on the player. On my Samsung player the remote has a button labelled SETUP. When you press this option while a disc is playing you get several setup options on the screen - one of which is for setting up the speakers.
I am not familiar with your DVD player but this is a fairly standard option found on most DVD players.
Thanks. My model does not have that particular setup. I quess yiu get what you pay for. I'll put it in the "Book of Great Lessons".

You can try one of two things:
- The DVD player should have a menu providing various options including speaker setup. You should select a 2 speaker setup in this menu - the default may be 5.1 which is why you are probably getting only the L + R channel info and the center and surround speakers are being cut off. When you choose a 2 speaker setup in this menu the 5.1 sound gets downmixed to 2 channels and so you end up getting all the info.- when you play DVDs most DVDs have audio options in their menu. You need to select stereo or 2channel here.
Try the settings on the player itself, then for each specific disk you play. Many -- most? -- DVDs will give you a 2-channel option.

I have the same results from my combi DVD/SACD/CD changer. Using strickly the analog outputs, when playing cds, stereo or multichannel SACDs, the player outputs at a certain level. But when playing a movie track though the built in DD/DTS decoders, the L/R output is reduced. I assume this is due to the decoding circuits.
There may be some level adjustments in your player's audio setup menu, but I know mine (Sony DVP650) only allows level adjustment of the secondary channels.
This should not be the case. The sound is processed differently for DVD than for CD because of the various movie audio formats, but there should not be such a drastic difference in volume levels. You might see if you could borrow a friend's DVD player to see if you experience the same thing.
