Good topic. I agree with your observations re VE disk. Another very good one is the AVIA Guide to HT disk. Cable-wise, the obvious advise is to use component over either composite or s-video. Assuming you are already doing this, however, IMHO, there is little, if any, advantage in expensive "videophile" component cables over those that you can DIY for little investment in time or money, using 75ohm RG-6 and reasonable quality terminations like the gold plated ones sold at RS (RCA, BNC, F-type, and the various adapters). A good crimping tool helps a lot. 100 feet of 75 ohm RG-6 sells at Home depot for something like $20, if I remember correctly. Markertek sells quality cabling, too. Watch this spark some controversy from those entrenched in the videophile cable camp.
No arguments from me. For short cable runs (two meters or less), I don't think I could reliably tell the difference between Radio Shack and top-of-the-line Monster Silver Video, at least between my Toshiba SD-3107 player and a Sony 36" XBR WEGA set. Dunno if the same can be said for long runs to video projection systems. FWIW, I use three of Tributaries Silver video cables for component video hookup between the DVD and the WEGA. This cable has one advantage: unlike the stiff Monster Silver video cables, Tributaries are very flexible and maintain 75 ohm impedance through tight bends. If you don't need the cable flexibility, save your money and use the cheap ones. Oh my gawd, I sound like mtry!
I picked up some Monster Video cable with F-Type connectors from the local Mega Big Box Store for under $15. It beat the cheap RS stuff, if for no other reason than the connectors were of good quality. The picture was better. If you use a splitter use a decent one, not those solid in dollar stores. I agree spending stupid money on video is a waste.
Have your TV screen gray scale calibrated by an ISF technician with a color analyzer. This will yield an increase in performance greater than any video cable can offer, and it will probably cost less than $250.
well, if you started ranting about examiner bias, reliability of double blind testing, etc, I might have thought you were mtrycraft. The kicker is..... that what he rants about is correct. Man, I hate that!!
