I mean can 2 channel sound better ???redbook dvd 16bit@44.2khz = 700,000 or so bits per second
while dvds are massively compressed. After compressed video there ain't much room left for audio.
Dolby digital is 10:1 compression (avg)
DTS is 3:1 (avg)But running a dvd off of the stereo outputs of the dvd player ????

I believe that the player typically constructs a two channel signal based off the Dolby Digital data using some kind of algorithm. This would be true whether you used the analog stereo outputs or instructed the player to output PCM out of the digital output. Some DVDs have 16 bit/48 kHz PCM soundtracks but not very many. BTW, the CD standard is 16 bits x 44.1 kHz x 2 channels = approximately 1.4 million bits/second.My experience with using the analog outputs or having the player output PCM is that it sounds like shit. Running the DD into a processor results in far superior sound. I will say that I think DD is inferior to PCM (the genuine article, such as would be found on a laserdisc) for music intensive material. DD seems fine for sound effects, though.
