What do you guys & gals think? I finally committed on something. So, lets hear the bad news. How bad is this unit? How bad did I get screwed?
i have the ovation, never heard that there was a plus. what does the plus have different? i really like the sound of the ovation. i agree that i wish it had discrete analogue stage (but at this point, i am using my cdp as a transport, so it doesn't matter. but for the future, i may be tempted to get a different transport with outboard DAC, in which case it would be nice to have a discrete analogue stage; however, i think you'd have to spend considerable amount to match the DAC performance). the only other option i wish it had was balanced digital inputs and balanced center. perhaps an am/fm tuner as well, although i never listen to radio. but, other than that, i enjoy it immensely without regret of getting a different pre/pro.
the Ovation-Plus is identical to the Signature with a digital input signal. It only surrendered the Signature's superior ADC samplers. The Ovation chose the convenient ability to switch video inputs, from whose consequences the Signature chose to isolate itself but requires you to buy another unit.
ME: "I was informed that the Ovation-Plus had the Signature's entire digital section & the Ovation's analog section."DEALER: "Yes and no......it has the Signature DAC card with the Ovation/Encore motherboard and back panel. What you get out of this combo(Ovation Plus) is sonics close to that of the Signature and a video switcher. What you lose is a great deal of performance using analog inputs, half the number of analog inputs, no teflon in the back-board or the other upgraded components that come on it and the added interference caused by internal video switching. Let's not kid ourselves here, if the Ovation Plus was the sonic equal of the Signature and has the added feature of on-board video switching, why would they even need the Signature at $1K more or bother offering an external video switcher(doing it the right way) for $2K."
I have the Signature and I am pretty happy with it. My only wishes are more balanced outputs besides the main and analog pass through w/o the a/d. Their customer service is very good. I send in my unit a few months ago to upgrade to the latest revison.

The price tag is still haunting me. I haggled the price down to $4500, but damn!!! That pretty much doubled the cost of my entire system.
Krell KAV-500 ($2500 used)
Magnepan MG2.7 ($1000 used)
Magnepan MGCC1 ($ 500 used)
Magnepan MGLR1 ($ 700 demo)
CAL CL-10 ($1200 new )
Pioneer CLD-99 ($ 600 used)
JVC HSR-9600 ($ 400 used)
Last summer I spent about $15000 on my stereo upgrade - getting the Signature, Krell 250M and DV09 and I angonized over it for along time before buying. But now I don't regret it at all and I am enjoying it. I though about getting less expensive stuff but then that was not what I really wanted. Next year I'll get some Martin Logan speakers to complete the upgrade. Life is short - enjoy the music. Merry Christmas
