Out of curiosity, have you cleaned the laser with a cleaner? When mine acts like that I just throw on the cleaning disc with a little fluid and walla it's all set to go again....John
Follow Ups:
Cleaned the player after my post. Did help, but didn't fix the problem entirely. Got a copy of "Mr Holland's Opus" today. Tried the newer player, worked flawlessly, so I'm sure it's not the player.
