What should I be looking for in a low budget receiver ($300)? In talking with the local dealers, I have one guy pushing the Yamaha 450-watt 6.1 channel receiver (HTR-6240) and another pushing the Onkyo 390 watt 6.1 receiver (TXSR501). Will be primarily used for movies not music. Using Bose Acoustimass-5 speaker system. I know nothing about home theatre and stumbled on this site. Any help or direction would be appreciated! Thanks.

After you decide upon a receiver, put your Blose speakers up on eBay, & use whatever money you get to buy real speakers.

I agree, put those worthless speakers up on ebay.

It should be based on the sum of the Dynamic power, the amount of power each channel could produce for 1 msec @ 1 khz, one channel driven at a time into a infinite load, but calculated for a 1 ohm load.

Go for the one with the hgher power.

Give the Panasonic SA-XR45 digital receiver a try. All digital amplification stage. Can't go wrong for $300 from J&R. Search over on the Amp/Pre-amp asylum forum for more info. I think this is the best value out there right now.
