Hey y'all. I normally rummage about in the Audio'sylum, and you might be sick of this question but maybe you can help me ( and my folks ) out.First, I know next to nothing about televisions, I waste all my money on audio. BUT, my parents are big-time televison buffs ( movies and TIVO ), though they know next to nothing about the electronics.
So, they ran into a little money and want a quote " Big 'ole television " and asked for my advice as I'm the soldering iron arm of the family. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to tell them. They're looking to spend around $3k and want about 48" or bigger. They aren't biased toward LCD, Plasma, or CRT; but I did mention that I had heard LCD's have problems with "motion-blur", and seeing as my father's mood is directly proportional to the record of the NY Giants ( he's in a bad mood lately ), a television that displays football well is a must.
Are there any models you'd recommend? Should I go out and buy a copy of TAV? I'd be grateful for any advice you can offer, I'd really like to make my folks happy.

Well, tell them to look into front projection. For that money, they could have a 70-100" picture. Tell the Dad to imagine watching the Giants on an 8 foot screen. A great projector, some cables, and a screen can be purchased for under $3K.With front projection, you have to worry a lot more about how much light the room gets... windows will cause problems during the day, but you can always budget in money for new curtains. If it's a basement or easily light controlled room, all the better.
If you're going to look into it at all, I'd suggest the Sanyo PLV-Z2. It's bright, is 720p HD native, and had been getting a lot of good reviews. If you go to www.avsforum.com, then go to forums -> display devices, you'll find a bunch of great info from end users. For projectors, look at the "Under $3500" section and look for any references to the Z2. To see actual screen shots, check out "Screens" and open a few posts.
Of course you can always look into a rear projection... but just remember the size of it and think how to get it into the house. Plasma is always an option, but I still think it's over-priced. Check out avsforum for them, too.

Unfortunately my Old Man is dead set against Front Projection. I can't talk him into it.I've been looking around and have my eye on the Panasonic 42PWD6UY, anyone familiar with this unit?

I forgot to mention that my father saw a Hitachi ( don't know model # ) at Circuit City that he liked. Are Hitachi televisions well regarded? Should they be as skeptical about buying a televison at C.C./BestBuy as I would be about buying stereo equipment?
