A buddy was asking me why to get a 7.1 receiver when dvds have 6.1 on them at the most. I thought about it and couldn't come up with a good answer. I already have a 7.1 receiver (Denon 3803) so I'm not really worried about it, but wouldn't a 6.1 receiver be enough? If someone had to choose between a 6.1 or pay a bit more for a 7.1, why would the 7.1 be justified?

Follow Ups:
Because the 7.1 eliminates a phenomenon caused bt 6.1 that sometimes interferes with proper decoding of the center front track and causes dialog to appear as if it is coming from the rear.

Actually, what a 6.1 speaker system does is (to sometimes) cause rear back sounds to seem as though they're coming from the front. The (front) center channel always sounds as though it's coming from the front. There's no problem with this channel. What a 7.1 speaker system does, by using two speakers for that same back channel, is to allow the back channel sound to come from where it's supposed to -- the rear of the room.
