Follow Ups:
The benefit of the HDMI would be a digital signal presented to the TV at its native resolution, which I would assume would be 1080i. Should be an easy test. Let us know.
I've read that HDMI or DVI aren't necessarily going to produce the best image since different TVs resolve digital input better than others. Some produce better images with component video input than HDMI. Don't ask me about theory, I'm just parroting something I read recently. I suppose you need to try both and judge.

Technically the HDMI or DVI interface can provide better picture quality vs the analog component video cables. Some DVD players and TV sets cannot accept higher than 480p via component cables. My Denon player for example will upsample 720p or 1080i to its DVI outputs only so I use it and the DVI input on my Sony TV. Double check the features/specs of your DVD player and RPTV.

I read that on certain CRT's (where this is considered a useless feature) if you output at 720P and let the TV Up that to 1080i you get a better piture than going out at 1080i. Or if you go out at 480P then let the TV take it up to 1080i you are ok. I dunno. I havent tried it yet. I will this weekend though when my TV gets here. You have to remember though that the DVD is only 480i in the first place. Kind of a sad standard.

Since my display is 720p native, one would think feeding it 720p over DVI would provide the best picture. Turns out 1080i over DVI from satellite receiver gave me better PQ than 720p from this same receiver suggesting to me the the display was doing a better job converting 1080i (or even 720p broadcast stuff?) to the displays native 720p resolution than the source.I strongly suspect the story will change when I get a better source player which will upconvert any video source to the displays' native 720p resolution; at least my audition/demo of this piece would be highly suggestive this would happen.

I have found that with my Sony XBR CRT 16:9 TV, I get the best DVD picture via DVI at 720p. I tried 1080i but to my eyes 720p was a better overall match for my setup. However, DVD player upsampled 1080i or 720p to the TV were both better than 480p.BUT.... the BEST looking picture comes from my HDTV tuner if the original content was shot in HD. Live HD broadcasts are also incredible and better than any upsampled DVD I've seen.
