So here's the deal, in Readers Digest form.We have a a 42" HDTV 16:9 plasma upstairs supported with a small mid-fi receiver & M&K speakers. Prior to that we watched, and still have, a 50" 4:3 rear projection Hitachi downstairs with full surround sound.
Due to the 42" blowing away the 50" we no longer watch the 50" or enjoy the surround. The 50" simply needs to go away.
Cost is a major factor, but we're going to attempt a upgrade anyway. Assume we are selling the 50" for whatever it will get, ($500.00? it's two years old)
We looked at LCD & DLP projectors. Due to the finshed drywall over duct work we cannot use a ceiling mount projector and get an image of worthwhile size.
This leaves us looking for 16:9 with flat screens. We'll take EDTV. We cannot afford another plasma. I would consider a "skinny" rear projector, but figiure we should go for an LCD.
We would like to get as close as possible to the 42" size we have upstairs. What you anyone on this forum reccommend we look for? I would be happy to buy across to internet to lower the cost and make this happen.
Follow Ups:
Have the 23" M1 & the picture is stunning for LCD Titles are displayed w/no blocking effects...

#1 If you could get a 50" plasma for > $3k, would you mind a refurbished display?#2 When you said "LCD", did you mean flat panel LCD (thin like a plasma) or rear projection LCD?
#1 = refurb is ok with me
#2 - We prefer a flat planel hang on the wall like our plasma upstairs.
#3 - 2K tops

This company makes a 30" flat-panel LCD (1280x768) which can be found for <$1800 (that was over 6 months ago). Very shortly they will have a 37" flat-panel LCD (1920x1080) for $2500 retail.Plasmas in the 42" range can be found for <$2k, but they are ED models. Check out 1800plasmas.com for price comparisons.

Large LCDs are still the most expensive display technology. An LCD the size you're seeking is going to cost a lot more than EDTV plasma. I've seen several 42" EDTV plasmas on sale for well under $3 grand. One, Sylvania, was only $2,000 at Good Guys, and looked just as good as the Sony and Phillips. I read somewhere LG owns the Sylvania name now. Made me think hard about EDTV vs HDTV. From 10 feet away....

And BTW, the latest Consumer Reports talks about EDTV vs HDTV plasmas and they mentioned that some EDTVs look about the same as some HDTVs. It's not just about 'resolution' but how the signal is processed.I'm not (yet) in the market for plasma or direct view (thin) LCD but maybe in another year or so. I've also read that we may see another 25% drop in price by year end.

I *am* in the market for a plasma or dlp set. I'm visiting all the stores and doing some comparisons. Based on my needs... bright room during the day and the desire to someday wall mount the set, I'm leaning toward an inexpensive EDTV plasma. The main problem I have is altitude but more manufacturers have come around to making 'high altitude' plasma sets. Even LG (which looked pretty good BTW) had a 9000-feet rated EDTV plasma. I'm in Colorado at just over 6500-feet which is marginal for many 'standard' plasma sets which tend to buzz loudly at these higher elevations.

SED technology is to be introduced by Toshiba later this year. Its a thin screen technology that uses what amounts to a micro-CRT for each pixel. It was developed by Canon. Reports I've read say it has the image quality of plasma at far less cost (eventually) and has no inherent degradation issues. Another one too watch is thin DLP RP; RCA has a 60" that only about 8 inches deep and can be wall-hung.Having recently bought a big HDTV, I'm really disappointed in the dearth of HD material; network HD broadcasts are mostly 720 res (vs 1080) wasted on the "edgy" dark photography that all the dramas show seem to use, and the PBS and Discovery nature stuff in HD gets old fast. Aside from DVDs (ED) and sports (HD), which ARE superb, your not missing much.

Haven't heard about SED. I'll look into it. I'm presently enjoying my boat anchor 34" HDTV CRT but I'm anxious to get a bigger screen but without the bulk.
