I have a Sony STR-DE985 HT receiver. I got a good deal on some Infinity monitors yesterday and brought them home and hooked them up for music purposes. Thumbing through the manual, the receiver says only use 8-16 ohm speakers, however these guys are 4 ohms. I played audio through them for about 3 hours straight, do you think I did any damage to my receiver?
Follow Ups:
Even 8 ohm rated speakers will have an impedance curve that will likely dip below 8 ohm somewhere in the frequencies they reproduce. In other words: some 8 ohm speakers may present a load near 4 ohm sometimes. The receiver may just not do as well with 4 ohm speakers. Or the power rating for the receiver is totally different at 4 ohm than it is for 8 ohm.
One thing to watch out for: does the receiver get super hot when you run music with the 4 ohm speakers for an hour or so? If so, they might be a problem. But if you can safely touch the top with your hand without fear of burns, you're likely okay. Just watch out for overheating.
