I purchased a DVD online that does not play on either of my DVD players; yet plays fine and dandy on the computers I own. All of them. I am guessing regional encoding. Any way to run just a cable from the laptop say, to the Panansonic television? Do I need a converter? Will the picture still roll?

Follow Ups:
as Abe pointed out, you may not be happy. 15 pin RGB works into RGB or DVI-I input. There are plenty of video cards that have DVI-D or component out. The cost varies.
As one who has done the HT-PC thing, well . . . though it was sometimes quite (actually extremely) good I would not go there again. It might cost as much to get a great picture out of your PC as a new DVD player would be.
However, in a pinch the RGB works. And RGB to DVI-I cables are available for a pitance on eBay.

Do your PC's have any 'special' outputs for video? Not just the usual 15-pin VGA connector for an outboard PC monitor. If they don't, you can still try connecting this VGA connector to your HDTV monitor... assuming the monitor has a VGA input connector. Then run the DVD video in 'full-screen' mode and see what happens. I don't think you'll be happy with the picture quality. You can also experiment with the resolution setting on your PC's screen while the signal is output to your HDTV monitor.

what are the reasons for the lower quality?
RGB is analog, n'est ce pas? Is it all related to that? Are you talking primarily about DVD quality? We're using RGB from the "old" computer that I put into service as a music server (and just upgraded the video card to an ATI 9200 Xtasy for gaming. Setup a wireless network to give internet access to my vision-impaired wife on the Plasma, too), haven't tried DVI (to HDMI) yet for games.
I run my laptoop to my Hitachi HDTV via the SVideo cable. It gives decent 480p, but not even close to my Denon 2900.
