This is likely a painfully stupid question, but I cannot seem to get a straight answer from anyone, so please help me if you can. I am currently using a Marantz SR-6200 6.1 surround sound receiver with 3 Bryston 2B-LP power amplifiers in my home theatre system along with a powered subwoofer. I have the opportunity to upgrade (???) to a 7.1 channel Yamaha RX-V750 (basically as a gift), but I do not want to change my speaker/amplifier arrangement to 7.1 channels.I have been told that the rear speakers of a 7.1 system both carry the same mono signal (much like the early Dolby Pro-Logic rears), and that all I need to do is use one of the rear preamp outputs to my existing 6.1 arrangement. Is this true? Also, while I am getting a newer reciever, is this really an upgrade? I am pleased with the Marantz, but you guys know what it is like ... something new!

Follow Ups:
In the Set-Up menu on the Yamaha make sure you tell it that you are only using one surround back speaker. That will create only one channel when the receiver is using its DSP to derive the surround back information. Real 6.1 movies only have one additional channel. To the best of my knowledge there is no such thing as a 7.1 movie, only 5.1 and 6.1 for DD and DTS with or without THX. The receivers can artificially make separate surr back left and right channels though ( 5 channel stereo becomes 7 channel stereo with 2 ch sources ), but only when the source is 5.1 or less channels. Specifiy only one rear speaker and the DSP will only make one rear channel !
The Yamaha is a good receiver, but I doubt it would be an upgrade. It is too similiar in relative quality. Does the Yamaha have component video up conversion from composite and S-video that the Marantz does not.?? IF so and you wanted to send a VCR of SD sat receiver to a single component input on an HDTV, than that may be useful, otherwise I probably would not bother.
My uncle wants to get something like this receiver to upgrade from his old Carver, The Receiver, 2 channel with Sony Dolby Digital setup.He has a pair of Celestion SL 6 classic (wood cabinet) bookshelf monitors and a pair of ADS ? model 5 in mid/bass satellites. His M & K sub has a problem, and he wants to replace it. He has no center channel.
I advised to try and use his 4 bookshelf speakers, esp. the Celestions somewhere if not here and buy a center and repair his sub or replace with Hsu VTF-2 Mk II.
