Is there any way to defeatb this idiotic scheme. My Fujitsu plasma is not HDCP complient so plugging in an HDMI device yields nothing.

You cannot defeat the HDCP signal when using an all digital connection, but you can get around using an HDCP device with a non-HDCP compliant display.
This linked product accepts a signal from an HDMI port (or a DVI-D port that is HDCP encrypted) and outputs an analog RGB signal.
