Im considering upgrading to HDTV. Where I live, I would have to go with a satellite system. Im confused about getting an HDTV signal. If I buy a tv with a built in tuner, does the satellite receiver also have to have a tuner? If thats so,is the tvs tuner simply for over the air HD? Are there any advantages to buying a tv with a built in tuner?

I don't understand the statement that if you have satelite, you don't need a separate OTA tuner. - I have the Dish HD receiver with an add-on cartridge that permits reception of OTA HD signals. - However, as far as I know, the Dish system does not provide for reception of our local stations unless I pay an extra fee. So, I still use the OTA tuner in our integrated HD TV for local stations, and for some viewing of HD stations. (I got the Dish tuner because the tuner in our set can't get the audio on all the HD stations, for some reason.)- Doe most of the external tuners receive both HD and VHS signals?

If you go with satellite HD, you don't need any tuner in the tv / monitor. The satelittel box will feed the tv with a DVI or HDMI or maybe a component connector. The only time you need a HD tuner is if you want to watch over the air (antenna) tv feeds from local stations.

as I understand it, is if you have a HD tuner in your TV, you can do without the satelite box(less clutter).

If you get satellite HD like Dish or Direct- you can NOT use the tv tuner in place of the satellite box. They are two different formats plus the satellite box is required to DECODE the signal.Over the air HD is not great unless you live close to stations

If you are willing to go with Cable, not satelite, more TV's are coming out with CableCard slots. Instead of using a separate cable box, you get the cablecard from your cable company and pop it into the TV, which will decode all the cable channels. These TVs, like the Sony in the link, usually also has a separate over-the-air HD tuner inside as well.

Thank you. If I can ask one more question. Does an HDTV tuner act as an antenna as well? What I mean is, if the over the air stations are snowy now, will they still be snowy or will the tuner improve that? Thanks again.
Sure can understand why you're confused. Suggest you have a chat with your local Direct TV or Dish representative. My Direct TV service includes the specially shaped HD dishlike antena and a HD decoder box. I recieve all local channels via over the air transmission by way of the satellite antenna, i.e. it picks up both the satellite signal and the regular over the air ones. My reception is excellant on all the digital channels. You may be able to recieve the same service. FWIW, I could save a couple bucks and set up a separate antenna for my local sations, but have thought the bother was worth it.
IMO, satellite is the way to go, unlimited channels now and in the future.
good luck,
You will still need an antenna. The decoder simply decodes the digital signal.BTW, even if you go w/ satellite HD, you'll still need an antenna (but not an internal decoder - the satellite box will do this) to get over-the-air HD signals. Currently, satellite can't offer HD from your local channels.
