Many DVD's allow you to select what type of audio to use in their main menu.
When you put in a DVD, see if there is an "Audio Options" menu item on the DVD's main menu. Often there is an option for "Stereo" or "Dolby Pro-Logic" which is the 5-channel dolby digital soundtrack mixed down to stereo.
