anyone familiar with the JBL studio series/northridge series or the Yamaha cls-200 home theater speaker system? Thinking about buying one of the 2. Any advice would be appreciated for this is my first HT system. Thanks
The Canadian speakers have a good rep (PSB, Energy, Paradigm, Sound Dynamics).
I find the big problem with Klipsh and JBL (and Yamaha's) is that they
are marketed via mass market outlets primamrily. Thus it is difficult
to get a good hearing. I managed to get a demo at J&R the other day,
and I really liked the JBL Studio series (even with the tweet poked
in on the one of the pairs). I preferred them to the Klipsh SB5's,
in that environment. I also think they look way cool in the light wood
finish!
Hello, Thanks for the response. I'll tell you what I'm looking for if you dont mind giving some advice. I am on a budget so I want to stay below 1200 for all the speakers - fronts, rears, center, sub. The main use will be for home theater, something that sounds "real". I like to watch my action movies loud and I like alot of base. (I like the advent 550s sub with the sunfire amp--$340 new) SIZE- Doesnt matter too much, no bigger than average bookshelf for the rears, I would like floorstanding for the front. I occaisionally like to crank up some rock and my wife listens to easy/light pop stuff. All this will be hooked up to 100Wx5.1 dd kenwood vr3080 reciever(once again a budget reciever but you have to start somewhere), toshiba 2109 dvd, toshiba 32" tv. I was looking at the jbl studio series--yamaha--or the klipsch synergy series. What do you recommend and best (price) place to buy? Thanks, Barry
Hi Barry,I've never heard that Advent sub, so I can't comment on that. I think a good thing to do might be to get a pair of good floorstanders, center, and sub for around $1,000, then add the rears later. The rears especially can be skimped on early. They only play 10% of the time, so you can really use whatever you have laying around.
In the long run, I think this makes sense rather than getting everything at the same time. Still, there are some very decent setups to be had for your budget. Paradigm especially is considered a bargain at that price point. Look into them and also Energy. Go to your local HT/audio store (not mass-market stores) and seek advice there too.
Cheers,

You might want to take a look at some of PSB's speakers. Very good sound at very resonable price. You should be able to get what you are looking for from them in that price range. I prefer their sound to JBL or Yamaha as well.
You can call Divid from Yawa Audio, he is a nice guy. I just purchased a Yamaha RX V795A from him. Also they have vevy good repuatation from WWW.audioreview.com .Good luck!

If you insist on buying one of the two brands, definitely stay away from Yamaha. They make good receivers, not speakers. But, if you're willing to look at other brands at other stores, there's much better stuff out there for cheaper. What is your price limit? Is size a concern? How loud do you listen? Is really pounding bass important?Answer these questions, and you'll get more specific help.

FORGET THAT CHECK OUT PARADIGM.!
