on the General board, So let me ask the question here. Why are all the auction sites FULL of the Harmon Kardon avr75 recievers? The user reviews I've read said the sound quality on music is great. Would this be a good choice for my non-dvd home theater? I mean Dolby surround is fun, but the music is the first love. Would a smaller HK or other avr amp-rec be what I need. I have 60 watts per with powered sub and 15 rear now, lookin'for some more oomph. thanks
that's what the mass-market receiver makers sell you: more power, more channels. If it was really good sound, you wouldn't need it (or want it). Less can be more, but you have to be ready for it.
How is less more?
!!
The biggest difference would be rear channel power and features. You may like the HK better and it may have some features you may like better, but for 2 channel music, it's largely as sideways move.
It really depends on your speakers sensitivity, its nominal impedance and its minimum impedance and volume level you are trying to accomplish and your speakers ability to handle those spls without much distortion.
To get a 3db increase in spl level, a small change, you'd need 120watt amp, double the power. But these are usually peak levels as you don't listen, I hope, at such high levels as an average or your hearing will be damaged.
Do you have some dissatisfactions now?
And, if you do listen to home theater at all, that 15watts is not much power.
Volume isn't really a factor, I'm just looking for musical quality. It just seems the onkyo at 60 watts isn't quite cutting it. and the add on onkyo surround processer definitely needs to go!
