As you probably know, you can easily buy a DVD player that is "region-free" (i.e., a player that will play DVDs with any region code). Just do a Web search on "region-free" and "DVD" and you'll get tons of hits. I'm using a Kones DVD-3000 (manufactured by Samsung) -- it is not only region-free, but also Macrovision-disabled, which means that you can record from DVD to videotape. BTW, I live in Japan (region 2), and wanted a region-free DVD player so I could play region-1 DVDs purchased from Amazon in the US.
