I have a Pioneer DV-09 and the CD playback is excellent. If you must, I'd think about adding an outboard D/A converter to your DVD player, such as a Bel Canto, even Bel Canto states that DVD players make awesome transports due to their memory buffer that eliminates jitter! You absolutely could not go wrong with such a combo. My DV-09 includes a converter that is dual 24 bit and legato link. www.pioneerelectronics.com and www.thx.com reveal some nice Pioneer DVD players, and the new ones are progressive scan and feature high end DA conversion. I recently added the DVD player and Loewe digital progressive scan TV and must say I am now getting the most out of my system, it really was the logical choice in progressing my system. I don't know why you'd want to create 2 systems, get the most out of both!
Follow Ups:
Buy a good dvd player and add an outboard dac for cd playback. I use my dvd player for dvd's and as a transport and am very happy with my cd playback. Dan on this site has EXTENSIVE posts on mods to dvd players. I have incorporated some of them into my Sony DVPS-3000 (now discontinued) and am happy with the improvements.
Hi snodog,From your post and the reply, it's clear that I have some learning to do. I've never even heard of progressive scan. It sounds pretty cool though.
The reason I want 2 systems is because I've already invested substantially in my 2-channel system and don't plan on spending nearly as much for my HT system. As I said in my origional post, I'm infinately more interested in 2-channel audio then in HT. I don't want to polute my current system with three more channels of amplification and three more speakers that probably wouldn't come close to the performance of my current speakers.
My future HT must do audio and video well.
Thanks for your reply.....

I too learned a lot in the process of shopping, I think the internet is the greatest window shopping device ever, so there's a wealth of info. you might want to check out etown.com and www.audioreview.com, both pretty good sites for learning about the gear out there. good luck and plan well...btw progressive scan is video that's generated 1 frame at a time (loewe does 60 frames per second) instead of the usual interlaced scanning (there are a few designations such as 480i (most common), 480p (like Loewe), 720p, and 1080i (HD). I guess that a progressive scan DVD player combined with a progressive scan TV is perhaps the best combo out there, although I think my set-up ultimately yields a progressive image despite the DVD player outputting interlaced video.
I only use stereo audio in my HT, and am quite satisfied by the experience. I recommend a widescreen TV, see if you can still buy a Loewe planus from a dealer, these are discontinued and I bought mine for 2375 (excl. tax). The only thing is it only goes to 480 progressive resolution, which is perfect for DVD's, but in the future High Def. might become more dominant.
