Buy a good dvd player and add an outboard dac for cd playback. I use my dvd player for dvd's and as a transport and am very happy with my cd playback. Dan on this site has EXTENSIVE posts on mods to dvd players. I have incorporated some of them into my Sony DVPS-3000 (now discontinued) and am happy with the improvements.
