Is this a problem with all early Pioneer players
Follow Ups:
My Pioneer DVL 91 (one of the last combo LD & DVD players they made) has no problems with DD mono disks (older movies that were not remastered). They come through the digital output and are decoded as five channels of pure fat mono.
I'm a little confused by your post. No surround sound decoding is possible with mono. However any mono signal should play on your centre channel. Have you set your system up correctly? As a side issue quite a few DVDs claim to be DD and are not - most irritating.John
I thought the designation "Dolby Digital" didn't necessarily mean 5.1 or higher sound, I believe there is such a thing as Dolby stereo, etc. I think it's only a way to say that the sound was compressed via the Dolby Digital standard be it 7.1 surround or mono. My guess is the use the DVD player's analog outs for sound and go in the menu (if necessary) and turn on the analog out as opposed to PCM RAW or the likes.
I checked the Dolby site at
http://www.dolby.com/tech/l.br.0007.FullDDFAQ.html#q2
and quote -"Dolby Digital soundtracks can provide anything from mono to full 5.1-channel surround sound. DVD- Video discs of movies can even carry multiple versions of the soundtrack that differ in the number of channels. A disc might contain a 5.1-channel sound mix with the dialogue in one language, a Dolby Surround-encoded two-channel mix in another language, and a mono track with the directors’ comments or other supplementary information. The default soundtrack will vary from disc to disc, so always check the DVD disc’s Language menu for the choices offered."
Which all confuses me somewhat.

I thought that I was confused! Now I know the reason.
