Have you tried cleaning the player with a CD/DVD cleaner disc?
Follow Ups:
You mentioned trying the various aspect ratio and manipulations, I was curious if there were any changes at all in the distortions you seen? If the DVD itself is 4:3 it could be the Hatachi may not be able to scale to 16:9 as well as the Sony did.
If you have a surround receiver you could try taking the video to the receiver and see if it converts better. Some receivers don't have video upconversion though so you will need to check yours.
Also, are the problem DVD's big titles? I've had friends who have bought DVD's out of budget bins, like at Wal-Mart that had playback issues.
Are you sure they're not problems specific to that disc? I have an Eagles DTS disc which I love the sound on, but the video's terrible (and I know that). Other discs play fine. Some discs were just mastered terribly. Try playback on another player and see if the same occurs!
Yes I have cleaned it and it seems ok on newer concert DVDs I've bought. Only seems to happen on older disc's and they were ok when it was hooked up to a old sony wega xbr tv I have

A common problem with older players is that the drive belt on the laser goes bad.
