I don't know how much common sense she has, but before you goto bed, just unplug the damn thing. If she can't turn it on, it's must be broken. Works much better if you unplug it during a storm and tell her the lighting must have messed it up....(if you use the lighting line, don't forget to unplug and replug the VCR to get the flashing "12:00")
