Why use the receivers dac? I also have a 96/24 dac not being used, that I was planning to run the digital out from my DVD (not 96/24) to, from there I'd run the analog outs up to the A1, bypassing it's dac. Wouldn't that work, and actually be preferable? This stuff confuses me.John
Rod answerd well enough with all the 'mights.'
Yes it can be confusing. Unfortunately the only way is to check with a controlled testing. And, if it is that small of a differenc ehtat you have to strain and agonize over the possible differences, well, I am not to do that much agony.
The answer depends. Try both and see.The typical reason and it depends on the receiver is that many convert all analogue to digital. This means that you can't really bypass the internal CAD and get an extra A-D stage which may be noticeable. A general reason to use digital direct if possible.
While the DACs may be pretty much the same, they may vary in the analogue section so they *might* sound different. Adding the extra cable may also have an effect. You may like set-up better than another.
Of course, if you had 96/24 disks, you'd want to use your DAC to take advantage of that.
