If DTS isn't important, you can't go wrong with the going price. And considering the next "big" thing is DVD-A, SACD or DD7.1, upgradability isn't that important with whatever receiver you pick in that price range. In a couple years, they will all be outdated. So get something that sounds good NOW, but isn't too expensive to replace later.

That was my reason for buying the Nakamichi AV-8 last year, and ended up just doing that. I sold it and bought the B&K Ref 30 preamp.
