Fantasia 2000 has great orchestral music, and you get a choice of DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1. Since this was orchestral music, I thought I could finally compare the two formats and see what the difference is.
DTS was louder at the same preamp volume level. I could not get a read on which format I preferred though after correcting for volume. Did any of you notice a difference between DTS and DD 5.1? This was the most fun A/B'ing I ever had.
I must say that this is DVD is a fabulous way to show off your home theater. Great music, vivid visuals. I played it last night for my brother and his girlfriend, and they really enjoyed it.
I went ahead and used DTS last night when playing it for my guests just because it is more exotic I guess. I was curious how the Dolby Digital would sound though.
Did anyone else do a comparison of the Fantasia DVD in DTS and Dolby Digital?

Yes, I did, but very briefly. I discovered the DTS encoding right before I was ready to return the disc. I am going to buy it later and maybe some other DVDs with both DTS and DD.
The general impression I got (again, very general impression and my system/setup are far from settled) is that DTS sounds "better", cleaner and wider.

I am going to purchase Fantasia 2000 soon. Is there a difference in price between DTS and DD 5.1? I imagine the DTS version is more expensive. So your impressions are that they sound very close? What is your setup?

    Thanks for the link. Having both DTS and DD5.1 on the same disk is what inspired me to compare them.
    The review on your link says the following:
    "....The DTS version is preferred choice between the two formats, with a sound that simply sounds more natural, in particular from the tonality and fidelity of the string instruments. In addition, there is a slightly more compelling sense of resolution and texture within the spatial soundfield, and the low-end delivers with subtly yet noticeably greater depth."
    I wish they would provide a particulr track or sement that shows this DTS superiority. When I did my comparisons, the two formats were equivalent. But at least I have one opinion now(unless the reviewer is just parroting the DTS sales brochure, which what I am sustpecting since they do not provide any track details).
    Both formats sounded excellent, it is just hard for me to say which was better.

      Samir,
      The fellow was wondering if the DTS was more expensive. They are one in the same, right? That's all I was trying to point out here. On a side note, have you done any comparisons of video cables, specifically component?

        The Fantasia 2000 disc I have has BOTH FORMATS on it. On audio set up you can select which one you want. Dolby 5.1 is the default. If you select DTS, you go through one extra screen where they remind you you must have DTS capable equipment to reproduce it. That should answer the other person's question on this thread, (and you have answered it too).
        My question was COMPARING THE SOUND of the music from one format and the other. The link to a review of the disc that you thoughtfuly provided said DTS was better. But becasue they did not show any examples of why, I suspect that it was just a bogus statement, no cmparison seeems to be actually made. If they said that on a certain song that somehting sounded better, I could try and listen for it.
        However during my compairson they both sounded really good, and because it takes a minute to switch from one mode to the other I could not be sure which was better.
        Component video is nice because you get very secure connections compared to S video. When I first got my TV, a Mitsubishi ws73903 I compared the two for the heck of it. The picture was very close, and only with a side by side immediate comparison would I give the smallest of margins to component. This may be from bias since I was expecting it to be better. It is not a big obvious difference.

        I am very interested in this discussion. Tonight I am watching Gladiator which has the option between DTS and DD. I got onto audioasylum to figure out which one would give a better sound. I understand that Gladiator is not a pure musical like Fantasia. However, there is a powerful sound track and I wanted to optimize it.

        Thanks. I see your point regarding the comparison. I don't have DTS equipment, so I'll "suffer" with DD 5.1. Yeah, with all the DTS vs. DD stuff, I'm so far content with the DD. But then if I hear DTS and it's that much better, I guess I'll need a new pre/pro. I'd probably get the Sony unit because of the relatively low expense and my music system is pretty much taken care of. Except, I do want one of those new Sony 9000's. By I digress. What were we discussing? :)
