according to Stereophile the picture quality is the same on each player. From what I have seem I would tend to agree, at least on the mass market TVs I have seen. The more expensive machines tend to have better internal construction e.g. better power supplies and better sound (or so it is claimed).

Yes reference sound better and provide a better picture. But since the picture quality of most dvd players is already so good the small improvement is not worth the money for most folks. However if you are a videophile it may well be. I am an audiophile and if I can get a 10% improvement in sound for double the cost, I'll take it!!!
The difference in picture quality can be made up for by using better quality interconnects, rather than the junk that came in the box. I can't comment on the sound as I have not heard these "high line" players in stereo systems.
