sonically the best place for surrounds is high up behind you. best if approximately same distance away as fronts but that is not critical. if aesthetics win out then the null point placement is ok. if you can move the couch up into the room (1/3 or even 1/4 of the length of average rectangular room) then your surround system will best approximate what filmmaker intended, especially with dipoles which utilize reflections to best effect
my couch is agaist the back wall (wife wants it this way)some times I move it about 3 feet forward.
