I am considering upgrading my system. I would like to get a preamp/processor. I am currently using a Vantas DPA-S50 with my Krell KRC-2 preamp. I want to use xlr connections to the power amps. Current amps are Krell KSA 250 and an Anthem MCA-5. I am considering Aragon Soundstage, Bryston SP-1, Anthem AVM2. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.
I have to say B&K Ref30 because this baby has tons of future proof built into ie. direct by-passed for 2 and 5.1 channel, THX-EX (Surround 7), component video switching, and IEEE1394 Firewire. But its sound is what I'm primarily sold for and as well as its price.
I would add the Cal Audio Labs SSP 2500 to your list.
I've been using the Aragon Soundstage for a few months. It's easy to use and my favorite feature is the stereo direct mode available for all inputs.I'm really just a 2 channel guy that liked to have DD/DTS and excellent 2 channel in one box. I think I found it.
I've been recommending the B&K Reference 30. Seems to have a lot of bases covered and you can listen to your music either in direct mode (volume control only) or using the 24/96 DAC's inside. I've had mine only for about a month, but have put a ton of miles on it between music and movies.Good luck.
See Ya. Dave
... make excellent processors. Digital audio has never sounded so good here since purchasing their 861 and the surround mode HT processing is awesome. The Dolby surround is so good that Dolby Digital is not dramatically better. The 5 series processor is reputed to be very similar although lacking the extensive card based technology of the 8.John
