I was considering between the Pioneer DV-37 ($650) and the Toshiba 6200 ($575).I want progressive playback, great audio, and the ability to playback VCD's (VCD/XVCD/SVCD) created and burned on CDR/CDRW from my computer..
I will be connecting this to a Toshiba TW56x81 HDTV.
Any opinions??
Follow Ups:
Craig, if you use a progressive DVD player, obviously what you watch it on (tv/prjector/etc..) *must* have progressive too. But I caution you, the images I've seen from a fairly talented friend of mine (he too has visted the site you listed, and many others)come out the same or a notch better than regular VHS tape. If you use the more expensive DVDR's then your in fat city (but you need a dvd burner = more $). Just my 2 cents, I'm not trying to dissuade you, just warn you. Good luck !
My objectives are not only to create and watch my own VCD's, but also to have a great DVD movie watching experience.A DVD player must have both progressive (for DVD) and CDR/RW for VCD/XVCD/SVCD's.
MP3 would be a extra bonus..
It was designed on a Toshiba set. That price you quote is high. I've seen the unit for under $500 on the net.
I picked up on the Toshiba player today and it's got a great picture and sounds real good with my B&K Reference 30. I bought it at a Bricks and Mortar store for $700; just more comfortable than with the faceless net. I've gotten some real bad vibes talking on the phone with a few internet audio/video retailers. The SD-6200 is taking over video work here. It's good to have DTS now as well. Listening to the Criterion remaster of The Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter" is much more satisfying in DTS than Dolby Digital.
See Ya. Dave
Where can I find the Toshiba at this price and the Pioneer DV37 for that matter. In other words, what's a good site to buy equipment at?
Thanks
Toshiba AND 6200. Also call Onecall.
The $449 SD5700 and $399 SD4700, include progressive scan capabilities with 540 lines of resolution and a built-in 10-bit/54MHz video DAC. The difference between the SD5700 and the SD4700 is that the SD5700 will have a silver finish and the SD4700 will have a black finish.
Any idea when these new machines will ship?Is there anywhere to go and see the specs?
I hope they will play CDR/RW and VCD...
Sorry I'm not answering your question, but I just have to know what kind of success you've had burning vcd's. My friend has tried several different methods and not a one looked any better than VHS tape. In fact, I've gotten better results backing DVD's up to SVHS tape. Is this something you plan on doing or are you currently doing it ? And how's the quality - ghosting or no ghosting ?
Hi Iguana ManHow did you record DVD's onto SVHS tape? I thought the Macrovison (or whatever it's called) protection prevented this.

They have a video enhancer that defeats it. That way you can "backup" your dvd to vhs (preferably SVHS). I don't have the site url anymore, so do a search on Sima.

...I want to do this, but have not done it yet. I've been reading on www.vcdhelper.com about how to do it.
If your plan is to burn a VCD from a DVD, I really don't think it will matter if your player is progressive or not. It comes down to the amount of data you can jam on a CD, and from what I've seen, it all comes out with a ghosting image around everything.
Did you look at the Denon DVD-2800? Although there were two bugs (see earlier posts or do a search), price is just a bit higher and it may have more to offer you. Take a look at www.denon.com to see if you are interested. Just another possible option.
For starters, the new DVDO video decoder is better than the Genesis chip, for calibration of the display device fine adjustments are available from the player, it offers 24/96 on the digital outputs, it uses a 12-bit/54 MHz video converter that upsamples to 4:4:4, etc.
99% of folks would not be able to see any difference between the players with movie content. Those specs you quote are virtually meaningless.

I'm just not dumb enough to chase after meaningless specs.
Ahhh, but so impressive...Those specs look really good.
If it only costs 100-200$ more, it would be nice to have the HDCD and MP3 playback.
Will have to wait until someone else buys and trys it first. I would like to see a review posted about the Denon DVD-2800.
