I am trying integrate HT into my existing 2ch system. I want to still utilize my 2 ch setup for audio playback. So what I was thinking of doing is to hook up both my 2ch preamp and a AV preamp to my front channel amp via a Y-connector(Actually to a crossover to split the signal up for a sub/main.) The center, surround on the AV preamp would go to their own dedicated amplification.I was just wondering if there would be any impedence issues with the 2 preamps' output stage running in parallel, and having both preamp feeding into one other's output stage, especially if the 2ch preamp has tubes.
My system would be:
Audible Illusion Modulus 2B preamp
Undetermined AV preamp(Maybe marantz AV-9000)
both feeding into:
Hsu Crossover/AmpThe 2 channel system:
Hsu 1220 sub
Krell KSA-80 amp
Magnepan MGIIIa front speakerThe existing HT equipment
Mitsubishi X-100 XGA front projector
Da-Lite tensioned 100" screen
B&K ST-202 amp for surround
VCREquipments needed for the rest of HT.
Magnepan SMG surrounds
DVDO line doubler(?)
THX receiver for center surround(?)
DVD player
Or for $15 you can go to Radio shack and get a stereo input selector. Just run each receiver into a different input (it has 3) and the output to the amp.
I use a 2-channel stereo pre-amp in my setup with a separate DD/DTS processor. The key is using a RS SPL meter to set the db level of the main L&R speakers at a specific (marked) level of volume control on the AI 2B pre-amp when the AV-pre-amp is being used. In my case I'm lucky, my 75db reference volume for my AV-pre-amp puts my stereo preamp volume control at the 12 o'clock position. When I listen to my CDP, the volume is normally at 9-10 o'clock.I would recommend you take the L&R analog out from your AV pre-amp and hook it up to an "aux" analog input on your AI 2B pre-amp. Then hook the AI 2B L&R analog output to the Krell KSA-80. I notice you use the HSU sub with your 2-channel system. If you don't use an active electronic crossover between the Maggies and HSU sub today, you might want to try something like a Marchand electronic crossover between the AI 2B and the Krell amp. This means you would not connect the sub to the AV-preamp, but would instead set the AV pre-amp to route all bass to the main L&R (by selecting no sub out).
This way when you hook up your current CDP or transport and dac combo to the AI 2B to listen to stereo you don't need to turn on the AV pre-amp.
I am using the Hsu electronic crossover/amp for my 2ch system. That is why it is somewhat hard finding an AV preamp, since not everybody reroutes LFE to the main speakers if "no sub" is selected. Some preamps discards the LFE, others(like the acurus ACT-3 w/upgraded bass mgmnt) does not reroute LFE on DTS(a requierment of DTS) still others bypass bass management in its 6ch direct input(if I ever hook up DVD-A to it.Maybe I could hook up the AV preamp to the 2ch preamp, and instead of turning the volume to 12 o'clock, I just run the tape out to the other half of the Y connector and put the preamp to mute(it has a physical mute switch.) This way, the AV preamp does not have to incur a extra gain/buffer stage(the tape monitor on the 2B is unbuffered.)
