I have in front of me an excellent article from 'Consumers Reports' magazine on 32 and 36 inch direct view (tube) TV's. They extensively tested several models, and the best 36" TV's in terms of picture quality, both with S-Video input and antenna/cable input were as follows (these are the top rated ones with retail prices of $1000 or less, and in many cases, street prices are around $750-$900). This is a good starting (and finishing point, for some) point. The listed TV's are all 36" models.Toshiba 36A40
Toshiba 36AX60
Hitachi 36GX01B
JVC AV-36120
JVC AV-36D201Surprisingly, many Panasonics did not fare as well, and the Sony's are over $1000.
Hope this helps!

To hell with what their tests say! Panasonic and Sony are making the best CRT sets on the market at the moment. Unfortunately its never any good going into a dealer and looking at the pictures on display there, as too often they are badly set up or are one of 10's of sets being fed of cheap distribution amps.I've seen just about everything available on the market in the UK, Plasma's, CRT's projection and projectors. Budget was not an issue for me, but I bought the new Sony 36FS70 which I think is equivelant to your XBR400. This set is easily capable of showing up the shortcommings in transmission quality. personally I would trie to adjust your budget and get a 32" Sony or at least a Panasonic equivalent. Try also to make sure it has an RGB input for your DVD, this makes a real difference in performance.
